Reflection
In the 22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time, through the Gospel, Jesus reminds us about humility and generosity. At a meal, He notices people choosing the best seats for themselves. Instead, He teaches that true greatness comes not from putting ourselves first, but from choosing the humble place and welcoming those who cannot repay us.
In our school and parish community, this message encourages us to live the Gospel values of service and hospitality. When we reach out to others without expecting anything in return, we reflect the love of Christ. Whether it’s a kind word to another parent at the gate, helping at a school event, or welcoming someone new to our school, we are called to give generously and humbly.
As a Catholic community, may we always remember that our worth is not found in status or recognition, but in living as followers of Jesus who serve others with joy and humility.
Year 6 Mass with the Bishop
On Tuesday 12 August our Year 6 students were accompanied by their teachers and myself to Mary Immaculate Catholic Primary School, Eagle Vale to celebrate Mass with other Year 6 students from the region led by Bishop Brian Mascord. It was a wonderful Eucharistic experience with our students fully engaging in the Mass.
They were reverent, responsive and sang beautifully with a number of people speaking to me afterwards about our wonderful students. One person even saying they were a ‘powerhouse’ when singing. This is wonderful feedback for us and our wonderful Year 6 students and the way that they value Eucharistic celebrations.
Year 5 Camp - Canberra
On August 13 and 14, our Year 5 students were accompanied by their teachers Mr Borg, Ms Vella and Ms Vazquez, along with Mrs Anunovic and myself to Canberra. The two day excursion was busy and educational.
Our students enjoyed the National Museum, Parliament House, Questacon, Old Parliament House, The National Arboretum, The Australian Institute of Sport and The War Memorial.
Their engagement in all aspects of the excursion was exceptional with the bus driver even saying that they were the best group of children he has taken to Canberra!
Athletics Selection Trials
On Tuesday August 19th, four Holy Family students represented us at the Wollongong Selection Trials held in Wollongong. We are really proud of Koah, Thomas, Jeremiah and Estelle who represented our school with pride and showed great sportsmanship. Estelle has made it through to the NSWCPS MACKILLOP ATHLETICS TRIALS for Long Jump, on Wednesday 24th September.
Book Week Parade
Our recent whole school Book Week parade was a wonderful occasion where the whole community came together to celebrate the adventures that books take us on! I thank each parent and carer for their support of the parade, as I know that it takes a lot of effort to dress your child. The children were beaming all day!
Stage One Parent Forum
Last Friday a number of parents came and enjoyed the P&F and school Parent Forum. The focus was on reading. Parents were able to go into their child’s classroom and read one of the new texts that were funded by the P&F with them. They then listened to a short talk given by Miss Laidlaw about reading and helping their child at home. The event finished with a shared afternoon tea provided by the P&F. If you weren’t able to attend, we hope that you can attend the next one!
School Cyclic Inquiry
We are looking forward Day one of our School Cyclic Inquiry this Wednesday. We have a panel of 5 external experts coming to the school, to assist us in determining our strategic priorities for the next four years. They have already received our School Self Review Report which includes numerous data sets and our analysis of them. We will know more about how the parent focus group for Day two will run after we meet the panel on Wednesday.
In all things at Holy Family, Give Thanks.

Uniform Changeover
From Monday 8th September, students have the choice to wear their full summer or full winter uniform - they cannot wear a combination of both. Commencing Monday 13th October, full summer uniform is compulsory.
Lost Property
The Lost Property bins are located at the student entrance in the administration block. Parents are welcome to come to Lost Property to see if they can locate their child's jacket/jumper/coat. At the moment all the clothing in the bins have no names, so cannot be returned. Please feel free to take an item to replace the clothing you have lost.
Please label all items of clothing, especially those that can be easily removed eg hats, jackets, jumpers.
Lunch boxes and drink bottles are often handed in; however, if they are not labelled we keep these for one week before we dispose of them.
Lateness to School
Please be reminded that School begins at 8.45am each day. Students that arrive after 8.45am are marked as a 'partial absence' for the day. If they arrive without an adult, it is put in as an "unjustified" lateness.
Medication Policy for Students
Annual Updates
All medical plans supplied to the school need to be updated annually - ideally at the beginning of each school year.
Asthma and AnaphylaxisIf your child suffers from asthma and/or anaphylaxis, you must provide the school with a current Action Plan signed by your GP.
Asthma Medication
- Children are allowed to carry their asthma medication (e.g., puffers) on their person.
- Additionally, an asthma puffer must be kept in the school’s first aid kit.
- No other medication is permitted to be carried by students.
Prescription Medication
For students who need to take prescription medication during school hours, a “Request for School to Administer Medication” form must be submitted to the office along with the medication.
Daily Absence Procedures
If your child is unwell or will be absent from school for a day, you can advise through 'Attendance' in the Compass App. Alternatively, you can email the school on info@hfidow.catholic.edu.au or telephone the school office.
Extended Absence Procedures
For extended absences (of more than 5 school days), parents must submit the Notification of Extended Absence form online - Extended Absence Online Notification Link, along with relevant documentation. This documentation should include: Dates, locations of travel, purpose and reasons for travel outside school holidays.
Opal Card Reminder
We would like to remind students and staff of the importance of carrying and correctly tapping on their Opal cards when using public transport services.
Recent observations continue to show low compliance rates among some student passengers, which impacts our ability to accurately monitor patronage and ensure adequate service delivery. Your continued support in reinforcing the following key messages to students is appreciated:
- Students must carry their Opal card at all times when using public transport.
- Opal cards should be tapped on and off for every journey.
- Tap-on data helps assess demand and plan reliable school bus services.
We kindly ask that this reminder be communicated to students during roll call or via the school newsletter. If you would like support materials or posters to assist, we’re happy to provide them.
Thank you for your ongoing partnership.

Year 4 Excursion - Science Space Centre, Wollongong
On Friday, 22nd August, Year 4 went on an exciting excursion to the Science Space Centre in Wollongong. The day was filled with terrific and fascinating activities!
Our first stop was the planetarium, where we explored the mysteries of space. It was so interesting, and I felt like I learned more in one session than NASA could teach me in years! After that, we visited smaller exhibits on topics like psychology, sound, and magnetism, all of which were so cool to experience.
The highlight of the day was the bubble show! We got to see liquid nitrogen and even touch it, which was amazing. The best part was when the instructor used a giant bubble wand to let three people stand inside a massive bubble. It was unforgettable!
Later, we explored more hands-on exhibits on the second floor, including a pull-up bar and a see-saw. We ended the day with a creative workshop, designing and testing helipads made from random materials. It was a fun way to practise problem-solving and teamwork.
As we hopped back on the bus, we were all tired but so happy. It was an incredible day filled with learning and laughter!

On the 28th of August, students from all across the diocese participated in the Soccer Gala Day. Holy Family students from years 3 to 6 went and played 6 games each, there were about 9 people on the field and 15 in each age group. Unfortunately, due to the strong winds, 2 of the games were sadly cancelled. But, that still didn’t stop the students from showing great sportsmanship and teamwork in each game and to the opponents. The Soccer Gala Day was a fun, special day for those who enjoy soccer and like competing against other schools. It was a very fun time and students would definitely love to play again.
